The Epstein files have claimed their first OpenAI victim: board member Larry Summers

Larry Summers, the former U.S. Treasury Secretary, has announced his resignation from the board of OpenAI, following the release of emails linking him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This development comes just days after Congress made public a substantial collection of communications involving Epstein, revealing troubling exchanges that have raised serious ethical questions. Summers, who previously served as the president of Harvard University and is currently a professor there, is now facing scrutiny from the university, which has initiated its own investigation into his connections with Epstein. According to reports from The Harvard Crimson, Summers is also expected to withdraw from various public engagements as the fallout continues. The House and Senate's decision to disclose Epstein's records prompted Summers's swift exit from OpenAI. These emails, exchanged between November 2018 and July 2019, showcase Summers discussing personal matters with Epstein, including one instance where he sought advice about pursuing a relationship with a woman he was mentoring. At the time, Summers was married, and his correspondence raised alarms about the power dynamics at play. In one email, he expressed concerns about the mentee's confusion and her desire to maintain a professional connection despite the complicated personal feelings involved. Epstein, who referred to himself as Summers's “wing man,” provided advice that included keeping the woman in a “forced holding pattern.” The situation escalated as Epstein encouraged Summers to play the “long game” in his pursuit. The scandal surrounding Epstein intensified after his arrest in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking minors. As investigations continue, the implications of Summers's relationship with Epstein and the context of their communications remain under the spotlight.
