Shares of Alphabet experienced a notable surge on July 15, following Warren Buffett's announcement that Berkshire Hathaway had made an investment in the tech giant last year. The stock price increased by 3.9%, reaching approximately $373 in the afternoon, building on a nearly 2% rise from the previous day. This significant spike propelled Google co-founder Larry Page’s net worth up by $8 billion, bringing it to an impressive $301.7 billion. Meanwhile, Sergey Brin also saw his fortune climb, increasing by $7.3 billion to $278.2 billion. In a CNBC interview, Buffett revealed that Berkshire Hathaway's initial investment in Alphabet was made last year, admitting he regretted not investing sooner. He acknowledged that Alphabet is encountering heightened competition in the field of artificial intelligence. Berkshire disclosed that it acquired over 17.8 million Alphabet shares, a stake valued at around $4.3 billion at the time. Additionally, the investment group had previously bought 36.4 million Class A shares and 3.6 million Class C shares, raising its total to about 58 million shares, now worth around $21 billion. Earlier this year, Alphabet announced that Berkshire had committed to purchasing $10 billion of newly issued stock aimed at bolstering the company's AI infrastructure. According to Forbes, Larry Page and Sergey Brin are now the second and third richest individuals globally, trailing only Elon Musk, while Buffett ranks tenth with a wealth of $139.1 billion. The rise in Alphabet's shares has been impressive, showing an increase of nearly 18% this year, outpacing the Nasdaq’s 12% gain. Like other major tech firms, Alphabet is ramping up its investments to meet the soaring demand for AI products. The company recently reported annual revenues surpassing $400 billion for the first time, driven largely by growth in both Google Services and Google Cloud, with cloud revenue soaring by 48%. Looking ahead, Alphabet has indicated that its spending could reach as high as $185 billion in fiscal 2026, following last year's capital expenditures of $105 billion.
