Residents of Lake Tahoe, a popular tourist destination and ski resort, are now in a race against time to secure a new energy supplier by May 2027. This urgency arises after a Nevada-based utility company announced it would halt its power supply to the region, citing a growing demand for energy from new data centers as a significant factor. The local electricity provider, Liberty Utilities, has relied heavily on NV Energy, sourcing approximately 75% of its power from this Nevada utility. However, NV Energy's recent decision to discontinue service to Lake Tahoe will affect around 49,000 residents living in this scenic area nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, straddling the California-Nevada border. According to Liberty's filing with California regulators, NV Energy's decision is largely influenced by the rapid expansion of data center projects in northern Nevada, which are projected to demand an additional 5,900 megawatts of power by 2033. This burgeoning sector has prompted NV Energy to enter contracts with tech giants, including Amazon, to enhance its energy generation capabilities, such as deploying 700 megawatts of low-carbon energy for data center operations in Reno. Despite the focus on data centers, NV Energy representatives have clarified that this decision was part of a broader long-term strategy, predating the recent surge in AI-related developments. The utility company had previously sold its California assets to Liberty in 2009 and had been operating under a series of temporary agreements to provide power to Lake Tahoe until alternative arrangements could be made.
