From CRED to WhatsApp head: Who is Kunal Shah and why is he in the spotlight?

Kunal Shah, the visionary entrepreneur behind CRED, is set to take on the role of global head of WhatsApp, as announced by Meta. This significant move comes alongside a hefty $900 million investment in CRED, highlighting Shah's rising influence in the tech world. Replacing Will Cathcart, who has been at the forefront of WhatsApp since 2019, Shah's appointment symbolizes a notable shift towards Indian leadership in global technology. He will be the first Indian CEO to lead the platform, which boasts a staggering three billion users worldwide, including over 500 million in India. Shah's journey is inspiring; born and raised in Mumbai, he began his academic pursuit in philosophy at Wilson College before pivoting to the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) for an MBA, which he eventually left. His entrepreneurial journey kicked off with multiple startups from 2000 to 2010, culminating in the launch of Freecharge in 2010 with co-founder Sandeep Tandon. This venture revolutionized online payments and was acquired by Snapdeal in 2015 for approximately $400 million, marking one of India's largest startup acquisitions at that time. After departing from Freecharge in 2016, Shah transitioned to become an angel investor, supporting numerous tech startups, including Unacademy and TVF. In 2018, he founded CRED, a fintech platform that incentivizes users for timely credit card payments. Under Shah's leadership, CRED has expanded its services to include UPI payments and various financial transactions, setting the stage for his next adventure at WhatsApp. In a recent post on X, Shah reflected on his entrepreneurial journey and announced his transition: "CRED is ready for its next phase. I am stepping back from the operating role while continuing as a shareholder." He emphasized his excitement about leading WhatsApp and collaborating with Meta's leadership to unlock the platform's full potential. Meta's decision to appoint Shah is strategic, aimed at enhancing WhatsApp's digital payment services, which have lagged behind competitors like PhonePe and Google Pay in India. Shah's experience in consumer-focused products positions him as a key player in expanding WhatsApp's offerings in payments, commerce, and AI. CEO Mark Zuckerberg commended Shah for his contributions to CRED, noting his ability to think globally while building essential technology, a skill set that will be crucial as he leads WhatsApp into its next chapter.
