From delivery boy to WhatsApp chief: The inspiring journey of Kunal Shah

Kunal Shah's journey from financial struggle to becoming a prominent figure in the tech industry is nothing short of remarkable. Growing up in Mumbai, Shah's family faced a daunting financial crisis when their business failed, leading them into bankruptcy. This challenging situation compelled him to take on a delivery job at a young age to support himself and his family. Unlike many of his peers who pursued prestigious degrees from top universities, Shah's educational path was dictated by necessity. While juggling responsibilities as a delivery boy and data entry operator, he enrolled in Wilson College to study Philosophy, a choice motivated by the program's early morning schedule that allowed him to work throughout the day. After acquiring a BA in Philosophy, he briefly joined an MBA program at NMIMS but chose to leave after the first year. Shah's tenacity did not wane as he transitioned into adulthood. He became financially independent as a teenager, taking on various jobs such as selling pirated CDs, operating a cyber café from home, tutoring students, and even selling henna cones. By the age of 16, he was already earning his own income while gaining invaluable insights into consumer behavior and business dynamics. These experiences would later influence his unique entrepreneurial outlook. Rather than conforming to the traditional paths of IIT and IIM graduates, Shah leaned on practical experience and self-education. His transformational journey from a delivery boy and data entry operator to the founder of billion-dollar ventures like FreeCharge and CRED exemplifies one of India's most compelling startup success narratives. As an angel investor in various companies including Razorpay, Shiprocket, and Unacademy, Shah's influence continues to grow. His recent appointment as the head of WhatsApp, following Meta's substantial $900 million investment in CRED, positions him at the forefront of a platform used by over three billion people globally, including approximately 500 million users in India.
