In a significant move for the cryptocurrency market, Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi announced on Tuesday that the prominent crypto exchange has confidentially submitted its application for a U.S. initial public offering (IPO). This confirmation comes after earlier reports from CNBC regarding the company's intentions. Sethi shared these insights during his appearance at the Semafor World Economy conference in Washington, D.C. He emphasized Kraken's mission to democratize access to sophisticated trading strategies, making them available to individual investors rather than keeping them exclusive to professionals. Despite facing challenges, including a reported loss of over $6 billion in valuation, Kraken is navigating the turbulent waters of the crypto market. On the same day, Bloomberg revealed that Deutsche Börse Group is set to invest $200 million in Kraken, which would secure them a 1.5% ownership stake and suggest a valuation of approximately $13.3 billion. Just a few months prior, in November, Kraken raised $800 million at a valuation of $20 billion. Notably, Kraken had paused its IPO plans less than a month ago during a difficult period for cryptocurrencies, often referred to as the 'crypto winter,' which saw Bitcoin's price plummet to 40% below its peak in October. However, Bitcoin has shown signs of recovery, climbing to $76,000 on Tuesday, a level not witnessed since February, marking a 9% increase for the month of April. In contrast, rival crypto exchange Gemini Space Station has experienced a nearly 49% drop in its stock price, although it has seen a 15% increase in shares this month. This juxtaposition highlights the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency landscape and the challenges that exchanges like Kraken face as they pursue their IPO goals.
