Kodak denies it’s shutting down amid media reports of financial struggles

Eastman Kodak is firmly rejecting speculation about its potential shutdown. On Wednesday, various media reports, including those from CNN and CNBC, highlighted the company's current financial difficulties. These reports referenced Kodak's earnings statement, which cautioned investors about lacking 'committed financing or available liquidity' necessary to meet its debt obligations within the next year. In response, Kodak swiftly issued a press release asserting that it has 'no plans to cease operations' or to seek bankruptcy protection. Instead, the company outlined its intentions to 'repay, extend, or refinance' its debts before they come due, projecting a healthier financial position by early next year. The company elaborated on its financial strategy, mentioning a significant infusion of $300 million expected from its pension plan termination in December 2025. This capital will be pivotal in tackling a large portion of its $477 million term debt. Kodak plans to subsequently address the remaining $177 million in debt along with $100 million in outstanding preferred stock. Despite these assurances, Kodak has faced ongoing financial struggles, particularly as the rise of digital technology has outpaced traditional film sales. The iconic company, which has been around for 133 years, previously filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Yet, in a twist of fate, some Gen Z consumers have recently shown a renewed interest in vintage technologies like compact cameras and basic phones, tapping into a sense of nostalgia for eras they have not personally experienced.
