In a significant move against Amazon’s established Kindle and Goodreads ecosystem, reading tracker StoryGraph has partnered with Rakuten's Kobo, known for its user-friendly eReaders. This collaboration, which was initially announced in May, is now fully operational, allowing Kobo users to seamlessly track their reading habits. This integration marks Kobo as the first eReader to connect with StoryGraph's platform, providing a robust alternative to Amazon's dominance in the digital book market. Traditionally, Amazon has retained a stronghold by offering competitive pricing and a comprehensive online reading community via Goodreads. While numerous Goodreads alternatives have emerged, few have succeeded due to the lack of integration with e-reading devices, a gap that StoryGraph and Kobo have now effectively filled. With this new feature, users can automatically sync their reading progress with StoryGraph. Once a book is completed on a Kobo eReader, it will instantly be marked as “Read” on the user's StoryGraph account, updating their reading statistics in real-time. This functionality supports both ebooks and audiobooks across all Kobo devices and applications. The appeal of book tracking apps like StoryGraph lies in their ability to help readers maintain a detailed record of their reading journeys, favorite titles, and personalized recommendations. StoryGraph, in particular, provides in-depth analytics, including mood tracking and reading pace, enabling users to refine their reading habits. Additionally, the platform fosters a vibrant community where members can engage in reading challenges and book clubs, motivating them to continue their reading streaks. Founded in 2019 by Black British engineer Nadia Odunayo and CTO Rob Frelow, StoryGraph began as a small side project without external funding. Today, it boasts a community of over 5 million readers. The partnership with Kobo will expose the app to Kobo's 12 million users across 190 countries. Both Kobo and StoryGraph are poised to benefit from the ongoing cultural resurgence in reading, fueled by online communities like #booktok. According to Pew Research, the percentage of U.S. adults reading ebooks has significantly increased from 17% in 2011 to 31% last year. Additionally, the startup Everand has recently acquired the digital book community app Fable, indicating a growing trend towards integrating social reading experiences. The new Kobo-StoryGraph integration is available without a subscription, although StoryGraph offers a $5 monthly Plus subscription that unlocks enhanced features such as advanced statistics, filters, and custom charts.
