Klarna CEO wants to turn the platform into a 'super app' with AI

Klarna's CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, is optimistic about the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in reshaping how the fintech's 100 million users manage their banking needs. The company, known for pioneering the 'buy now, pay later' payment model, has announced a new venture into mobile phone plans in the U.S. through a collaboration with telecom startup Gigs. These plans offer unlimited data, calls, and texts at a competitive price of $40 per month. This latest offering aligns with Siemiatkowski's ambition to evolve Klarna into an all-encompassing personalized financial 'super app' that extends beyond conventional financial services. Previously, Klarna attempted a similar model by integrating various services, but it was met with confusion among customers, as Siemiatkowski revealed in a recent CNBC interview. However, he believes that advancements in AI present a renewed opportunity to better serve customers with tailored services. "In this new AI landscape, we can offer a more customized experience that resonates with individual users," Siemiatkowski explained. Super apps, which have gained immense popularity in China and other Asian markets, are designed to consolidate multiple mobile services—such as ride-hailing and food delivery—into a single platform. Despite their success in Asia, super apps have struggled to gain traction in Western markets for various reasons. Siemiatkowski has expressed a commitment to leveraging AI's capabilities, acknowledging the challenges of ensuring consistent functionality within the technology. "There's immense potential, but the key is making it work reliably," he stated. He envisions Klarna evolving into a 'digital financial assistant' that simplifies everyday banking tasks for users. For instance, if the platform identifies that a user is overpaying for their mobile plan, it could suggest a better pricing model and facilitate a switch with a single click. Reflecting on Klarna's prior efforts to become a super app, Siemiatkowski noted that the technology at the time was not sufficiently advanced. The company reported a $99 million loss for the quarter ending in March, attributed to one-time costs related to depreciation, share-based payments, and restructuring. Despite this, Klarna faces a perception challenge, particularly in the U.S., where it has become closely associated with the BNPL model. In contrast, European users recognize the broader capabilities of Klarna, such as storing deposits and making one-time payments. Siemiatkowski expressed frustration over negative reactions to Klarna's U.S. initiatives, such as its recent partnership with DoorDash, which did not receive a warm welcome online. He noted that such criticisms are less common in markets like Germany and the Nordics, where Klarna operates more like an established online payment system. Looking ahead, he envisions Klarna as a comprehensive financial ecosystem, potentially including investment options in stocks and cryptocurrencies, which he believes are becoming standard features for neobanks. While Klarna has temporarily paused plans for an IPO due to external economic pressures, Siemiatkowski confirmed that the company has made significant strides in establishing a strong brand presence in the U.S., now its largest market by user count. Whether or not Klarna pursues an IPO, its strategic goals remain focused on growth and enhancing liquidity for shareholders, underscoring its commitment to evolving as a leading financial service provider.
