In a bold move to ease internal tensions during budget cuts, Klarna's Chief Marketing Officer, David Sandström, opted for an unconventional solution: he created an AI version of himself. Instead of hosting a traditional town hall meeting, Sandström introduced this digital avatar during a recent webinar with AI company ElevenLabs, referring to it as an internal "venting machine." Acknowledging the frustrations of his team, Sandström emphasized the need for a channel where employees could express their grievances without resorting to angry messages. His AI counterpart is designed to be perpetually friendly, readily accepting blame and seeking forgiveness. "I wanted to eliminate the complaints during meetings and focus on future solutions instead," he explained. Employees could simply call a designated number to voice their concerns, allowing for a more constructive atmosphere in team meetings. Inspired by this initiative, Klarna also developed a chatbot modeled after CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski, enabling customers to provide feedback in a similar manner. This innovation turned out to be more than just a public relations tactic; it provided valuable insights and suggestions from clients. Klarna is not alone in its experimentation with AI avatars. Prominent figures like Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, have also created digital replicas that mimic their personas. Additionally, the AI Foundation has developed digital clones of well-known personalities such as Deepak Chopra and Richard Branson. As a frontrunner in leveraging AI to enhance efficiency in marketing and customer service, Klarna has faced challenges along the way. Siemiatkowski raised eyebrows in 2024 by stating that AI enabled his marketing team to operate effectively with fewer resources. However, the company later reversed some cost-cutting measures in customer support, acknowledging that initial reductions were excessive. Sandström admits that while AI has its advantages, there are still limitations that require human oversight. For instance, Klarna's Meta account, which autonomously generates content about its offerings, has occasionally produced erratic outputs when attempting to create viral material. Advertisers have reported similar experiences with Meta's AI tools, highlighting the need for ongoing improvements. Klarna's marketing department has fully embraced AI, collaborating with Databricks to centralize data from various platforms, making it accessible for non-technical staff. They are also experimenting with AI-generated synthetic audiences to gauge consumer reactions to different advertising strategies. Despite a significant revenue increase of 38% to $1 billion in late 2025, Klarna's stock has seen a nearly 50% decline this year, partly due to a net loss in the fourth quarter as the company expands into traditional lending markets. During the webinar, Sandström indicated a shift in hiring practices, seeking "marketing engineers" who possess both marketing acumen and technical knowledge. He believes a background in traditional marketing is still paramount, as it is easier to teach technical skills than to instill the nuanced qualities of effective marketing. Sandström expressed concerns about the future of mid-level generalist roles in the face of AI advancements, emphasizing the importance of hiring individuals with the right traits and mindset over specific experiences.
