The Kia PV5 electric van combines futuristic looks and thoughtful design

While vans may not be the first vehicle that comes to mind for most people, they play a crucial role in our daily lives, facilitating everything from package deliveries to food transportation. Traditionally, these vehicles have remained largely unchanged for decades, typically resembling large boxes powered by gasoline or diesel engines. Kia has recognized the need for innovation in this sector, launching the PV5, their inaugural electric van. Building on their recent successes in the electric vehicle market, Kia has designed the PV5 with versatility in mind. Customers can select from multiple configurations, and the company has already partnered with conversion specialists to transform the van into various applications. This includes options for camper converters who are eager to cater to the growing electric “vanlife” trend. The PV5 lineup includes the Passenger variant for transporting people, the Cargo variant for goods, a Crew model that accommodates both, and a Chassis Cab that offers flexibility for custom builds. At the heart of the PV5 is the Electric Global Modular Platform, an integral part of Kia’s ambitious “PBV” strategy, which stands for Platform Beyond Vehicle. This platform allows for various battery sizes, catering to diverse needs. In the UK market, customers can choose between a 52 kWh or 71.2 kWh battery, offering power outputs of 120 hp (90 kW) or 160 hp (120 kW), both producing 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque. The cargo model boasts an impressive range, reaching up to 256 miles (412 km) on a single charge, depending on the battery option selected. Charging is also convenient, with the ability to go from 10% to 80% in just half an hour using a 150 kW charger. While the PV5 may not be the fastest on the road, with acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) taking just under ten seconds, it’s designed to excel in utility and functionality, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of electric vans.
