In a significant shake-up for Elon Musk's xAI startup, co-founder Igor Babuschkin has announced his departure from the company, marking the end of his tenure in a post shared on X. Babuschkin, who played a pivotal role in leading engineering teams, was instrumental in establishing xAI as a major player in the AI model development landscape just a few years after its inception. In his announcement, Babuschkin reflected on his journey with the company, recounting the moment he first met Elon Musk. "Today was my last day at xAI, the company that I helped start with Elon Musk in 2023," he shared. "We had extensive discussions about AI and felt that a new company with a unique mission was essential." Following his exit, Babuschkin plans to launch his own venture capital firm, Babuschkin Ventures. He aims to focus on supporting AI safety research and investing in startups that strive to enhance humanity’s understanding of the universe. The inspiration for this new path came after a dinner conversation with Max Tegmark, founder of the Future of Life Institute, where they explored the importance of creating AI systems that promote safety for future generations. Babuschkin's departure comes on the heels of a challenging period for xAI, which has faced scrutiny due to several controversies surrounding its AI chatbot, Grok. Incidents included Grok echoing Musk's personal opinions on contentious issues, as well as controversial statements that led to public backlash. Recently, a new feature was launched that allowed users to create AI-generated videos of nude public figures, further exacerbating the criticism. Despite these challenges, xAI's models have demonstrated impressive performance across various benchmarks, competing strongly against other leading AI developers like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
