NBA superstar Kevin Durant is facing a perplexing challenge: he cannot recall the password to his Coinbase account, which contains a significant amount of bitcoin he began acquiring during his tenure with the Golden State Warriors in 2016. However, his agent, Rich Kleiman, remains optimistic about the situation. Kleiman shared that Durant’s inability to access his account has inadvertently worked in their favor. "We've yet to be able to track down his Coinbase account info, so we've never sold anything, and this bitcoin is just through the roof," he remarked during CNBC's Game Plan conference in Los Angeles. Kleiman humorously added, "It's just a process we haven't been able to figure out, but Bitcoin keeps going up … so, I mean, it's only benefited us." Durant, who is set to play for the Houston Rockets this upcoming season, started investing in bitcoin after a dinner in 2016 where the cryptocurrency was a hot topic among his then-teammates. "I just heard the word 'bitcoin' 25 times that evening, and the next day, we started investing in bitcoin," Kleiman recalled. Though the exact amount Durant invested remains undisclosed, historical data shows that bitcoin was valued between approximately $360 and $1,000 back in 2016. Today, it is trading at nearly $116,000, marking an astonishing increase of over 11,000% from its peak price during Durant's initial investments. Kleiman disclosed that Durant has been unable to access his Coinbase account for a few years due to a user error. He confirmed that they have been in direct contact with the Coinbase team to recover the account, which made it easier for him to joke about the situation on stage. Interestingly, both Durant and Kleiman are investors in Coinbase Global, and Kleiman emphasized that the platform has been instrumental in expanding their business. In 2021, their venture, Thirty Five Ventures, entered into a multi-year agreement with Coinbase to promote the trading platform. This partnership includes producing content focused on digital assets for Durant's sports and entertainment website, Boardroom. Coinbase has stated that users can reset their passwords through self-service tools available in their app and have a support team available 24/7 to assist with account recovery and other inquiries.
