The Karnataka government has officially launched KEO (Knowledge-driven, Economical, Open-source), a groundbreaking personal computer aimed at addressing the state’s digital divide. This innovative device is powered by RISC-V processors and operates on a Linux-based system, making it an affordable, open-source option for enhancing digital access. IT-BT Minister Priyanak Kharge emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting that only 15% of Karnataka's population currently has digital access. This figure falls short of what's needed to equip citizens for modern educational demands and job opportunities in a digital-first world. The introduction of KEO aims to directly tackle this challenge. Marketed as an 'AI-ready computer', KEO features an on-device AI core and comes preloaded with BUDDH, a specialized AI agent trained on the Karnataka Department of State Education Research and Training's syllabus. This tool is designed to assist students, especially in areas with limited internet connectivity. Currently functioning in English, there are plans to expand its capabilities to include Kannada. The device is equipped with a variety of connectivity options, including 4G, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and an audio jack. Additionally, it comes pre-installed with various learning, coding, and productivity applications. The emphasis on sustainability and longevity in KEO's design is noteworthy. Sharath Kumar Bache Gowda, Chairman of KEONICS, explained that the choice of open-source architectures like RISC-V ensures a longer life span for the device compared to traditional systems, thus combating planned obsolescence. Gowda also pointed out the project's technical significance, noting that deploying a Large Language Model (LLM) on an edge device in this way is a world-first achievement. Unveiled by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, KEO is not targeted as a luxury item but rather as an 'inclusion device'. The initial rollout will consist of 500 units aimed at business-to-consumer sales, with plans for broader distribution to schools, colleges, government offices, small businesses, and households shortly thereafter. The government will manage procurement through a partnership with local startups and semiconductor manufacturers to create custom hardware. The KEO AI PC is priced at Rs 18,999, marking a significant step towards inclusive technology access.
