Karnataka launches AI Workforce Impact Study to guide new IT Policy 2025

The government of Karnataka has embarked on an ambitious study aimed at evaluating the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the state's workforce. Spearheaded by the Department of Electronics, IT, and Biotechnology, this initiative is designed to inform the forthcoming IT Policy 2025 and drive strategic measures within the government's prominent skilling program, NIPUNA Karnataka. Positioned at the forefront of India's technological advancements, Bengaluru has recently earned the distinction of being ranked fifth globally in AI and Big Data ecosystems, boasting a workforce of over 100,000 AI professionals. The state's commitment to evidence-based policymaking is evident as it strives to cultivate inclusive and forward-thinking growth. "Our tech workforce has surpassed 1 million professionals, and Bengaluru stands as the preeminent AI capital of India. However, as AI continues to transform various industries, it is imperative that we ensure our workforce is not left behind," stated Priyank Kharge, the Minister for IT, BT, and RDPR, according to a government announcement. Kharge emphasized the importance of this study, calling it a vital step towards understanding the shifting job landscape. He highlighted the need for informed investments in reskilling through the NIPUNA Karnataka initiative, underlining the significance of nurturing the state’s most valuable asset—its talent. He also encouraged industry leaders to contribute their insights. The AI Workforce Impact Survey is now open, inviting feedback from industry leaders, HR executives, technology practitioners, and academic professionals. The survey seeks to analyze how AI is being woven into daily operations, identify which business functions are experiencing the most substantial changes due to AI accessibility, and pinpoint job roles that are at risk of automation. The findings from this initiative will play a crucial role in identifying skill gaps, recognizing emerging job roles, and understanding workforce disruptions across various sectors. Ultimately, this will enable the government to craft practical and future-oriented policies that foster both innovation and workforce resilience. The survey will remain accessible until June 27, 2025, with all responses assured to be confidential and anonymous.
