Kalshi, the prediction market platform, has received a significant reprieve as Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes' case against it faces an obstacle. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced on Friday that it has successfully obtained a temporary restraining order, halting the state from advancing its criminal case against the firm, whose CEO is Tarek Mansour. CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig expressed concerns over Arizona's legal approach, stating, "The state's attempt to utilize criminal law against firms complying with federal regulations establishes a troubling precedent. Today's court ruling clearly indicates that intimidation tactics to bypass federal law are unacceptable." Currently, Selig is the sole member of the CFTC following his confirmation last December, following the exit of former acting chair Caroline Pham, who transitioned to the cryptocurrency sector at MoonPay. Arizona's legal actions against Kalshi accuse the company of running an unlicensed gambling operation within the state. This restraining order comes shortly after a federal judge permitted Arizona's case to proceed, as reported by Bloomberg. In addition, the CFTC has initiated legal actions aimed at preventing similar cases from proceeding in Connecticut and Illinois, signaling a broader effort to protect compliant firms in the prediction market space.
