They’re golden: Fictional band fromK-Pop Demon Hunterstops the charts

Netflix's animated musical, K-Pop Demon Hunters, has emerged as a summer sensation since its debut in June. This critically acclaimed feature film has captivated audiences across generations, largely thanks to its catchy Korean pop soundtrack that is packed with memorable tunes. The standout track, "Golden," recently ascended to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart, marking a notable moment as it is the first fictional band to achieve this feat since the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from the 2022 film Encanto. K-Pop Demon Hunters has now secured its place as Netflix's most-watched animated film ever, and its success is not solely attributed to the music. The talented team at Sony Animation has crafted striking visuals reminiscent of anime, complemented by a fast-paced narrative and a script that artfully balances humor with emotional depth. The film quickly sets the stage, introducing viewers to a world where demons once roamed freely, preying on human souls. This chaos was curtailed by a trio of powerful women—singers and demon hunters—who used their voices to create a protective barrier known as the Honmoon, confining the demons within. The Honmoon has endured through generations, maintained by various musical trios, with hopes that one day it will achieve a "golden" state, permanently sealing away the demons. However, the demon king, Gwi-Ma, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, has other plans. The latest group of demon hunters, a K-Pop band named Huntr/x, is on the verge of realizing the Golden Honmoon. The band features Rumi (Arden Cho) as the lead vocalist, Mira (May Hong) as the dancer and choreographer, and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), an American-born rapper and lyricist. Rumi, however, harbors a dark secret: her father was a demon, leaving her with distinctive purple markings that she conceals from her fellow band members. In a plot twist, Gwi-Ma dispatches five demons to create a rival K-pop boy band called the Saja Boys, led by Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop). Their rise in popularity threatens the success of Huntr/x and the integrity of the Honmoon, especially as Rumi's markings spread, jeopardizing her singing abilities. This is particularly concerning as their new single, "Golden," performed by South Korean artist Ejae, demands an impressive vocal range, hitting a high A-5 in the chorus—a feat typically reserved for trained operatic sopranos. With the first live global performance of "Golden" set to be the pivotal moment that could usher in the Golden Honmoon, the stakes have never been higher for our heroes.
