Tesla must pay $329 million in damages after fatal Autopilot crash, jury says

A jury in Miami has ruled that Tesla bears partial responsibility for a deadly crash involving its Autopilot system in 2019, resulting in a substantial award of $329 million for the victims' families. This amount comprises $129 million in compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages against the electric vehicle manufacturer. The trial, which commenced on July 14 in the Southern District of Florida, revolved around the tragic events of a crash that occurred in Key Largo. George McGee, the driver of a Tesla Model S, was utilizing the Enhanced Autopilot feature when the incident unfolded. During the trial, McGee recounted that he dropped his mobile phone while driving and believed the system would automatically brake for obstacles. However, the vehicle accelerated through an intersection at over 60 miles per hour, colliding with a parked car and its owners, who were positioned on the opposite side. The crash tragically claimed the life of 22-year-old Naibel Benavides, whose body was found approximately 75 feet from the impact site. Her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo, survived but sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures and a traumatic brain injury. Brett Schreiber, the plaintiffs' attorney, criticized Tesla's approach, stating, "Tesla designed Autopilot only for controlled access highways yet deliberately chose not to restrict drivers from using it elsewhere, alongside Elon Musk telling the world Autopilot drove better than humans." He emphasized that the company's decisions have jeopardized the safety of ordinary citizens. This ruling arrives at a pivotal moment for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is advocating for the company's potential leadership in autonomous vehicle technology and the safety of its self-driving systems for public use. As of now, Tesla has not provided comments regarding the verdict, and the situation continues to evolve.
