Dimon warns on AI job losses, calls for government-business incentives

Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has raised concerns about the potential job losses that artificial intelligence could bring to the U.S. economy. Speaking at the Hill and Valley Forum in Washington, alongside Brendan Gallagher, former U.S. Representative and Palantir defense chief, Dimon emphasized the urgent need for a collaborative approach between government and businesses to mitigate these impacts. "If all of a sudden it creates unemployment, that's a significant problem for society," Dimon cautioned. He highlighted the necessity for a joint effort, stating, "It can't be just government. It's got to be business." Dimon proposed that the government could develop an incentive system encouraging businesses to take proactive measures, such as retraining employees or facilitating early retirements, to better navigate the transition brought about by AI advancements. The JPMorgan chief warned that the economic shifts initiated by AI technologies could occur at an unprecedented pace, perhaps even faster than previous technological revolutions like the internet. "It's coming, and it's going to come quickly," he asserted. Dimon expressed uncertainty about whether society would be adequately prepared to support workers displaced by these changes, emphasizing the importance of readiness. Dimon’s remarks are part of a broader dialogue about the repercussions of AI on employment, a topic that has gained traction in Washington. Lawmakers, including Senators Josh Hawley and Mark Warner, have introduced legislation requiring major corporations and the federal government to provide quarterly updates on job losses associated with AI. Additionally, a recent White House policy framework has called on Congress to enact measures that would assist workers during this technological transition.
