Joby Aviation has seen its stock price soar by approximately 14% following the delivery of its inaugural flying taxi to the United Arab Emirates. The company, known for its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, announced on Monday that the delivery marks a significant milestone as it prepares to launch services in the region by 2026. JoeBen Bevirt, the founder and CEO of Joby, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, "Our flights and operational footprint in Dubai are a monumental step toward weaving air taxi services into the fabric of daily life worldwide." He referred to the UAE as a pivotal launchpad for a global transformation in transportation. Joby’s initiative to introduce air taxi services in the UAE was first disclosed in February 2024, following an agreement with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. This partnership grants Joby exclusive rights to operate air taxi services in Dubai for six years. Furthermore, the company has commenced the construction of a vertiport at Dubai International Airport, with plans for additional locations at Palm Jumeirah and in the downtown and marina areas of Dubai. In addition to its Dubai ventures, Joby has also secured an air taxi agreement with three government departments in Abu Dhabi, further expanding its influence in the region. Earlier this month, Joby’s shares experienced a surge after Abdul Latif Jameel, a Saudi Arabian firm, announced a substantial investment of around $1 billion to acquire up to 300 eVTOLs, having also participated in Joby's Series C funding round. In 2023 alone, Joby’s stock has rallied over 32%, increasing its market capitalization to exceed $9 billion. The demand for air taxis—vehicles that can take off and land like helicopters—has been on the rise, although the service still faces challenges related to regulation and safety. Nonetheless, air taxis are praised for their potential to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce emissions. Earlier this month, an executive order signed by President Donald Trump included provisions for a pilot program to test electric air taxis.
