Joby Aviation has joined forces with defense giant L3Harris to create a cutting-edge military aircraft capable of both piloted and autonomous flight. This strategic collaboration leverages Joby's innovative hybrid vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) technology alongside L3Harris's extensive experience in military systems and certification processes. Testing for this next-generation aircraft is slated to begin this fall, with operational demonstrations anticipated in 2026. Paul Sciarra, Joby’s executive chairman, highlighted the urgency of developing such technology in light of recent global conflicts, stating, "Situations like the one in Ukraine are reshaping perspectives on low-altitude aviation. Delivering a craft that can swiftly transition from demonstration to deployment is crucial." As government budgets face scrutiny, the U.S. military is under pressure to enhance battlefield technology, particularly through the integration of artificial intelligence in autonomous vehicles and drones. Sciarra noted the military's contemplation over the efficacy of traditional expensive aircraft versus newer, more adaptable, and cost-effective autonomous solutions. He emphasized that the future of low-altitude support may lie in smaller, cheaper vehicles that can easily accommodate varying payloads. While Joby is primarily recognized for its electric air taxis, this new military craft is set to feature a gas turbine engine, marking a significant shift in its development focus.
