Joby Aviation says it is doubling production at its air taxi manufacturing hub

Joby Aviation is significantly enhancing its manufacturing capabilities in the United States as it prepares to launch its air taxi service by 2026. On Tuesday, the company announced the commencement of production at its upgraded components facility in Dayton, Ohio, alongside plans to increase output at its manufacturing site in Marina, California. Eric Allison, the company's product chief, emphasized the importance of speed, scale, and precision in revolutionizing urban mobility. He stated, "Our expanded manufacturing footprint in both California and Ohio is preparing us to do just that." The news had a positive impact on the stock market, with shares climbing over 7%, building on a 16% year-to-date increase. Joby Aviation, along with competitors like Archer Aviation and Eve Air Mobility, is focused on deploying electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to alleviate traffic congestion in urban areas, although they are still waiting for regulatory approval. Currently, Joby is navigating the approval process with the Federal Aviation Administration for its eVTOL vehicles. Last month, the company saw a surge in its stock prices following the announcement that it had delivered its first eVTOL to the United Arab Emirates, with plans to commence service in that region next year. Joby also secured an exclusive six-year agreement for air taxi services in Dubai last February. The new manufacturing facilities are expected to generate hundreds of full-time jobs, highlighting Joby's dedication to promoting American innovation. The 435,500-square-foot facility in California is projected to produce up to 24 aircraft annually once fully operational. Additionally, the launch coincided with the successful flight of the company’s sixth aircraft. Joby has partnered with engineers from Toyota to increase aircraft production to 500 units per year at the Ohio facility, following a $500 million deal struck last year. The surge in stock prices for Joby and its competitors reflects a growing interest in air mobility technology. Notably, an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in June included provisions for establishing an air taxi testing program, further propelling the industry forward.
