The rise of artificial intelligence is poised to create significant challenges for recent college graduates as companies increasingly leverage these technologies to enhance productivity. Bill McDermott, CEO of ServiceNow, expressed serious concerns during an appearance on 'Squawk on the Street.' He warned that unemployment rates for new graduates could soar to the mid-30s within the next few years. McDermott highlighted that a considerable portion of work is expected to be handled by AI agents, making it difficult for young professionals to stand out in the competitive corporate landscape. This trend is not isolated; businesses across various sectors are utilizing advanced AI tools to cut costs and streamline operations. For instance, Block recently announced plans to reduce its workforce by nearly 50% as automation takes over many job functions. The fears surrounding AI's disruptive potential have also affected other companies, such as Atlassian, which has seen its stock plummet by 54% this year due to concerns over AI's impact. The firm revealed plans to lay off about 10% of its workforce to allocate resources towards AI development. Experts warn that AI is dramatically reshaping the job market, particularly in white-collar roles such as coding and marketing. This transformation enables companies to reduce their hiring needs while simultaneously improving productivity. Palantir’s CEO, Alex Karp, has even suggested ambitions to increase revenue tenfold while decreasing staff numbers. In similar sentiments, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy indicated that his company would also reduce its corporate workforce through AI technologies. McDermott noted that ServiceNow's solutions have already eliminated 90% of customer service roles that previously required human involvement. This shift allows businesses to maintain their workforce levels while increasing revenue and free cash flow. 'I do think it's coming quicker than people anticipate,' he stated, underscoring the urgent need for adaptation in the job market.
