Jio Platforms, the digital subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has unveiled an innovative cloud-based virtual desktop service called JioPC, poised to revolutionize personal computing for countless families in India. This service is designed to convert standard televisions into fully operational personal computers using the existing Jio set-top box. Currently in a phase of free trials, which are available by invitation only, JioPC aligns with chairman Mukesh Ambani’s vision of narrowing the digital gap in a nation where the ownership of desktops and laptops is still comparatively low. The system allows users to access a virtual desktop environment directly on their TV screens by connecting a keyboard and mouse to the Jio set-top box. The Jio set-top box is included with Jio’s broadband plans or can be purchased separately for ₹5,499. Although the service does not yet support devices like webcams or printers, it provides essential computing capabilities through cloud technology. Users can utilize Office applications via their web browser, while LibreOffice, a free and open-source productivity suite, is pre-installed for offline use. This launch follows Jio’s introduction of the AX6000 WiFi 6 Universal Router, which aims to facilitate high-speed and reliable internet connectivity for larger homes and smart households in India. Released in June, this dual-band router can achieve speeds of up to 6000Mbps and employs advanced technologies such as OFDMA and MU-MIMO, ensuring stable connections even during peak times. With Jio’s unique True AI Mesh system, the AX6000 optimizes device connections to eliminate dead zones and enhance coverage, supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and covering up to 2,000 square feet, all while featuring WPA3 encryption for improved online security.
