Jio Call Agent to bring AI assistant into phone calls for over 500 million users

Reliance Jio is set to introduce an innovative AI-driven voice assistant that can seamlessly integrate into phone calls, providing users with the ability to transcribe conversations and execute various tasks, including ordering food and booking transportation. This initiative represents a significant step in the telecom giant's strategy to deepen AI services within its vast consumer network. The Jio Call Agent, which is anticipated to launch later this year, will be embedded within Jio's telecom framework, removing the necessity for users to download additional applications. "Jio is rolling out the Jio Call Agent, a native AI voice assistant," stated Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, during the company's 49th annual general meeting. With a subscriber base exceeding 500 million, this service aims to support multiple Indian languages, broadening access to AI functionalities beyond just English-speaking users. The assistant can be activated during an ongoing call by simply saying "Hey Jio," provided that all participants agree to its involvement. Rather than functioning as a standalone chatbot, Jio is marketing this assistant as a personal AI concierge that operates within the context of voice calls. According to Ambani, the technology will enable real-time transcription, capable of recognizing up to ten different speakers in a conference call. Moreover, it can generate summaries, extract actionable items, and create reminders to be shared after the call concludes. The Jio Call Agent will also be equipped to handle transactions during calls, allowing users to perform tasks such as ordering food, reserving tables, booking rides, or scheduling meetings without having to hang up. This launch signifies Jio's commitment to infusing generative AI into one of its most widely utilized services. Distinct from many AI assistants that necessitate dedicated apps, subscriptions, or specific devices, the Jio Call Agent will function directly at the network level. This initiative is part of Reliance Industries' broader vision to construct a comprehensive AI ecosystem that encompasses computing infrastructure, enterprise hosting, and consumer-oriented products. Reliance Intelligence, the AI arm of the group, is in the process of developing a robust, large-scale sovereign AI infrastructure in Jamnagar, with the first 120 megawatt phase projected to be operational by 2026. "Reliance Intelligence is creating a sovereign AI backbone in Jamnagar," Ambani noted. The company is also initiating the deployment of Nvidia's GB300 graphics processing units to support its AI infrastructure. Reliance aims to offer domestic hosting for AI models, ensuring that enterprises maintain control over their data and intellectual property. "Reliance Intelligence will provide sovereign AI hosting within India, ensuring transparency and portability for models," Ambani concluded, emphasizing the platform’s capacity to empower enterprises to retain ownership of their AI solutions while leveraging India's sovereign AI infrastructure.
