On Thursday, Jim Cramer from CNBC highlighted that SK Hynix's imminent debut on the Nasdaq presents U.S. investors with a unique opportunity to invest in the booming artificial intelligence sector. However, he cautioned that the South Korean memory-chip manufacturer is not without its risks. Cramer remarked, "The memory chip sector is thriving, and if you're prepared to navigate the volatility, this could be a strong investment choice." He advised investors interested in SK Hynix to consider starting with a modest position while keeping the option open to increase their investment during downturns. The company is set to commence trading on the Nasdaq on Friday via American depositary receipts (ADRs), which facilitate easier ownership of foreign shares for U.S. investors. With an impressive offering estimated at around $26.5 billion, it is poised to be one of the largest IPOs in recent history, following notable deals like those from Cerebras and SpaceX. Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, SK Hynix's shares have skyrocketed by approximately 2,550%, driving its market valuation over $1 trillion. Despite this remarkable surge, Cramer pointed out that the stock appears undervalued, with a price-to-earnings ratio just above seven for the current year. He emphasized that while SK Hynix's memory chips command high prices, the stock itself trades at a discount. The bullish outlook hinges on the assumption that ongoing AI investments will sustain robust demand for memory chips. Nonetheless, he warned of the historical boom-and-bust cycles that characterize the memory chip industry, cautioning investors about the potential pitfalls when supply eventually meets demand. Recent market activity reflects this volatility, as SK Hynix shares have declined about 25% from their peak on June 25, mirroring a broader downturn in memory stocks, which has also impacted major players like Samsung and Micron despite their strong earnings. Cramer concluded by stating that the opportunity with SK Hynix ultimately depends on whether AI will fundamentally alter the cyclical nature of the memory chip business. He noted that answering this question is complex, as historically, every boom in the memory chip market has led to a subsequent bust.
