Jim Cramer says one of SpaceX's biggest risks is this group of investors

During a recent segment on CNBC, Jim Cramer highlighted significant concerns surrounding SpaceX's impending IPO. He pointed out that the primary risk isn't a lack of investor interest but rather the overwhelming number of speculators seeking quick returns. "These speculators aren't in it for the long term; they might not even last through the day," Cramer remarked, expressing his unease about this group of investors. SpaceX is reportedly seeing demand that is four times greater than the shares available for its offering. While such oversubscription usually signals robust interest, Cramer emphasized that the nature of these investors could be more critical than the volume of demand itself. His warning lies in the possibility that many buyers might treat the IPO as a short-term opportunity, leading to potential volatility if they choose to sell shortly after trading begins. Cramer explained, "These traders could be detrimental to the stock's performance because their goal is to flip shares as quickly as possible." He advocates for a healthier IPO environment where investors are committed to holding shares over a longer duration. "The ideal scenario would feature retail investors who are not inclined to sell quickly, alongside early institutional investors who are invested for the long haul," he stated. To mitigate the influence of short-term traders, Cramer suggests that a tightly allocated offering could be beneficial. He believes that investors should welcome receiving fewer shares than requested, as this would indicate that demand exceeds supply. "If you ask for 100 shares and only receive 25, that's a positive sign," he noted. "It creates a sense of urgency among investors to acquire more." While the reported oversubscription of SpaceX's IPO is expected to diminish the impact of speculative trading, Cramer expressed that he would feel more reassured if demand were even stronger. He acknowledged, "With the current four times oversubscription, the scenario shouldn't lead to issues, but I'd feel significantly better if it were ten times oversubscribed."
