Nvidia CEO on leading the largest company in the world: constant anxiety and thousands of emails every morning

Jensen Huang’s commitment to Nvidia is unwavering, with the CEO admitting that there are no breaks in his busy schedule. Each day, he sifts through thousands of emails while grappling with a constant sense of anxiety that comes with steering one of the world’s most valuable companies through the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence. In a candid conversation on "The Joe Rogan Experience," Huang opened up about the pressures he faces while leading Nvidia, a company that has become a cornerstone of the AI revolution with a staggering market cap of $4.4 trillion. Reflecting on his tenure, he shared, "The phrase '30 days from going out of business' has echoed in my mind for the last 33 years. The feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty never fade away." Nvidia's journey to success wasn’t always smooth. The company flirted with bankruptcy multiple times during the 1990s. Despite its current standing as a tech giant, Huang remains haunted by those past challenges. He works tirelessly, dedicating seven days a week to ensure Nvidia stays at the forefront of technology. Huang believes that vulnerability can coexist with leadership, emphasizing that a leader does not need to always be infallible. He stated, "The company doesn’t require me to be a genius or to be right all the time. Being vulnerable helps me accept feedback and adapt strategies when necessary." The CEO’s drive is deeply rooted in a fear of failure rather than a desire for success. "I’m more motivated by the fear of failing than the pursuit of success," he admitted. Huang recounted a pivotal moment when he struggled to fulfill a contract with Sega; a $5 million lifeline from the company's CEO at the time served as a wake-up call. Huang’s philosophy on leadership acknowledges the tough realities of the business world. He noted that success is often accompanied by feelings of loneliness, fear, and embarrassment, all of which are integral to the journey. "Suffering is part of the journey, and it’s essential to share that experience with others," he remarked. His daily routine involves early mornings spent combing through a vast number of emails, a practice he believes is vital for maintaining a proactive mindset. Huang remarked, "Staying alert requires constant attention, and I read several thousand emails each day to ensure I’m on top of everything." His work ethic has evidently influenced his family. Huang proudly shared that both of his children are part of the Nvidia team, embodying the same relentless dedication he brings to the company. "I’m fortunate that both my kids work at Nvidia and contribute every single day," he said, highlighting the family’s shared commitment to the company’s mission.
