DreamWorks CEO turned VC Jeff Katzenberg says that AI is not going to be a 'zero-sum game'

Jeffrey Katzenberg, the former CEO of DreamWorks and now a venture capitalist, believes that the AI industry will not yield a single victor, even amidst discussions of potential market bubbles. During a recent episode of the "Sourcery" podcast, he expressed that by 2026, a clear distinction will emerge between companies achieving genuine advancements in AI and those that are not. Katzenberg emphasized that instead of fearing a bubble burst, the industry will experience a 'reckoning' where true innovators will shine. "It’s not going to be a zero-sum game, a winner-take-all scenario. However, it’s also clear that not every player will succeed in this space," he noted. Having previously held the position of chairman at Walt Disney Studios before co-founding DreamWorks, Katzenberg played a pivotal role in creating beloved animated films like "Shrek" and "Kung Fu Panda." After stepping down in 2016, he launched WndrCo, a venture capital firm in 2017 alongside former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa. Their investment portfolio includes emerging companies like Cursor, Harvey, and Figma. On the podcast, WndrCo’s general partner, ChenLi Wang, shared insights into their evaluation process for startups in the AI sector. He remarked on the importance of creativity and human ingenuity, asserting that these elements are vital for success. Wang criticized the reliance on standardized benchmarks, likening it to the long-standing complaints parents have about educational assessments stifling children's potential. This sentiment is echoed by other experts in the field. Dean Valentine, CEO of AI security startup ZeroPath, expressed skepticism about recent AI model claims, stating that many do not show meaningful improvement in their assessments. A study conducted by researchers at the European Commission's Joint Research Center also highlighted flaws in current evaluation methods, suggesting they often overlook broader societal implications in favor of mere performance metrics.
