Jeff Bezos joins the AI race as leader of engineering-focused startup

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is stepping into the AI sector as co-CEO of a new startup named Project Prometheus. This initiative has garnered impressive funding of $6.2 billion, with Bezos contributing a portion of that capital. This marks his first formal operational role since resigning as Amazon's CEO in July 2021. In his role at Project Prometheus, Bezos will work alongside Vik Bajaj, who has previously co-founded Google’s life sciences division and is a co-founder of Verily, a biotech firm under Alphabet. Bajaj also helped establish Foresite Labs, an AI-focused branch of Foresite Capital. Together, they aim to leverage AI for real-world applications, including robotics, drug design, and scientific discovery. The startup has already attracted nearly 100 employees, notably recruiting talent from leading AI firms such as OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta. Unlike traditional large language models that primarily learn from extensive text data, Project Prometheus plans to develop AI systems that learn through real-world experimentation. This innovative approach involves robots conducting large-scale scientific experiments, allowing the system to observe outcomes and refine its learning process. Last year, Bezos also invested in another AI venture, Physical Intelligence, which is similarly focused on integrating AI with robotics and has secured $300 million in funding. Bezos has expressed a strong belief in the potential of AI, likening it to other transformative technologies such as electricity. He emphasized that AI will enhance every conceivable application, stating, "Modern AI is a horizontal enabling layer. It can be used to improve everything. I guarantee you there is not a single application that you can think of that is not going to be made better by AI." As Bezos embarks on this new venture, the tech world watches closely, anticipating the innovations that Project Prometheus may bring to the AI landscape.
