Jeff Bezos says AI will create labour shortages, not replace humans

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has expressed a counter-narrative to the prevailing fear that artificial intelligence (AI) will render human workers obsolete. During his keynote at the VivaTech conference in Paris, Bezos argued that AI has the potential to create a labor shortage by enhancing the capabilities of both individuals and businesses. His optimistic perspective comes amidst widespread job cuts across various industries, as companies increasingly adopt automation and AI technologies. Bezos acknowledged the concerns many have regarding AI's impact on employment, stating, "I totally disagree with this point of view. In fact, AI is going to create a labor shortage." This viewpoint emerges at a time when a staggering 97,006 job losses were reported in the U.S. during May, with AI being linked to 40% of these layoffs, as per the global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Additionally, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that approximately half of Americans harbor fears about AI potentially displacing them or someone they know from their jobs. Despite Amazon's own job cuts—around 30,000 corporate positions eliminated since late last year, partly attributed to AI-enhanced efficiency—Bezos remains resolute in his belief that the potential applications of AI are virtually limitless. He highlighted that people are often constrained by existing barriers, which AI could help dismantle. At the conference, Bezos also discussed Prometheus, his new AI startup aimed at accelerating physical manufacturing processes. He touched on Blue Origin, his aerospace venture that competes with SpaceX, emphasizing a long-term vision for space exploration that includes relocating environmentally harmful industries from Earth. "If space travel becomes reliable and cost-effective, we could source materials from asteroids and the moon, allowing us to restore Earth to its pre-Industrial Revolution condition," he stated. Alongside Bezos, Blue Origin CEO David Limp announced that reconstruction efforts for the company's New Glenn rocket launch pad in Florida have commenced following an explosion incident in May.
