Jeff Bezos says AI is like a knife that can be used for good or bad, and the solution isn't 'no more data centers'

Jeff Bezos recently likened artificial intelligence and its supporting data centers to knives, emphasizing their dual potential for good and harm. During an appearance on CNBC, the Amazon co-founder argued against overly restrictive measures, stating, "You don't want to accidentally outlaw the knife because it can be used in a bad way. Knives are important tools, and while they may be misused, the answer isn't to eliminate data centers altogether." Bezos acknowledged the importance of sensible government regulation, citing the roles of federal agencies such as the FAA and FDA in ensuring public safety, particularly in aviation and pharmaceuticals. He believes that similar oversight will eventually apply to AI technologies. "There's lots to be said for healthy government regulation to improve safety and products," he remarked, stressing the need to find a balance in regulatory approaches. In addition to his advisory role at Amazon regarding AI, Bezos has assumed the position of co-CEO at Prometheus, an AI startup he founded with Vikram Bajaj, a veteran of Google's life sciences division. Prometheus has successfully raised $12 billion in its Series B funding round, with Bezos noting that the significant investment is necessary due to the high computational demands of their projects. While there has been much speculation about Prometheus's initiatives, Bezos clarified that the company is not focused on building robots. Instead, their mission is to develop AI models that revolutionize engineering and manufacturing, ultimately aspiring to create what he calls an "artificial general engineer." Bajaj elaborated, stating, "It's really a set of tools that will give those engineers the ability to turn their dreams into reality much, much more quickly than is possible." As discussions around AI regulation intensify, with various states considering new measures, the industry is also ramping up lobbying efforts. Recently, President Trump signed an executive order allowing AI developers to voluntarily submit their models for federal review prior to public release. This move comes amid growing concerns about the implications of AI technologies. Although Bezos did not comment on the executive order, discussions among industry leaders continue regarding the need for structured testing and oversight of AI models, especially those deemed high-risk.
