Software update bricks some Jeep 4xe hybrids over the weekend

This past weekend, numerous Jeep Wrangler 4xe hybrid owners encountered significant issues following an over-the-air software update intended for the Uconnect infotainment system. The rollout of this telematics update appears to have caused unexpected power loss while driving, leaving many drivers stranded. Affected owners have taken to social media platforms, including forums, Reddit, and YouTube, to share their alarming experiences. The update does not seem to disable the vehicles outright; rather, it results in powertrain failures during operation, which poses a serious risk to safety. Some drivers reported issues occurring at low speeds near their homes, while others experienced power loss at high-speed conditions on highways. In response to the mounting complaints, Jeep decided to retract the problematic update; however, by that time, many vehicles had already received the download. A representative from Stellantis, Jeep's parent company, advised users on a Jeep forum to disregard the update notification if they had not yet installed it. Furthermore, those who had already updated their vehicles were warned to refrain from using the hybrid or electric driving modes until the issue could be resolved. To mitigate the situation, Jeep has since released a patch aimed at fixing the problems caused by the initial update. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with deploying software updates at inconvenient times, a lesson that Stellantis has now learned the hard way. As of now, inquiries have been made to Stellantis for further clarification, and updates will be provided as they become available.
