The founder of China's Amazon wants his 700,000 blue-collar workers to be 'white-collarized' in time for AI

The founder of JD.com, often referred to as China's version of Amazon, has unveiled an ambitious plan for the company's vast workforce. Richard Liu, the billionaire entrepreneur, announced that his 700,000 delivery personnel will be transitioned to office roles in anticipation of a future dominated by artificial intelligence. Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO forum, Liu emphasized the necessity of adapting to technological advancements. He foresees a decline in the need for human labor in deliveries as robots take over these tasks. However, he insists that while manual delivery jobs may diminish, there will be a growing demand for skilled workers who can maintain and repair these robots. To facilitate this transition, JD.com has forged partnerships with 120 educational institutions across China. These collaborations aim to retrain blue-collar workers, equipping them with skills necessary for roles in technology and robotics maintenance. Liu stated, "JD.com is committed to ensuring that no employee is left behind as automation transforms our industry." Additionally, Liu advocated for the establishment of global standards governing the integration of AI and robotics into the workforce, stressing the importance of worker rights in this evolving landscape. He reiterated the company's pledge made earlier in May not to dismiss employees whose positions are supplanted by automation but to provide them with retraining opportunities instead. Automation is not a distant reality for JD.com. The company has already embraced robotic deliveries, mirroring trends seen across the industry. For instance, Meituan, a significant player in food delivery, announced plans to deploy drones for delivering items to remote locations like the Great Wall of China. As the automation wave sweeps through the e-commerce sector, major companies worldwide are following suit. Amazon, for example, operates a fleet of over 750,000 robots in its fulfillment centers. Similarly, startups like Robot.com and Starship are introducing delivery robots on college campuses, while DoorDash has recently rolled out its own delivery robots in urban settings. With AI and automation becoming central themes in corporate strategies, many companies are citing these technologies as influencing recent workforce reductions.
