Japan Airlines begins humanoid robot trials at Tokyo's Haneda airport as labor shortages bite

In response to ongoing labor shortages, Japan Airlines has initiated trials of humanoid robots for ground operations at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The airline is collaborating with GMO AI & Robotics to implement these robots for various tasks, including baggage handling and cabin cleaning, with trials set to commence in May. This move comes at a critical time as Japan's aviation industry faces challenges from increasing tourism and a diminishing workforce, largely due to an aging population. Japan Airlines aims for a phased rollout of the humanoid robots across Haneda Airport, with the goal of full integration by 2028. During a recent demonstration, a humanoid robot developed by China's Unitree showcased its capabilities by sliding packages across a conveyor belt, greeting spectators, and even shaking hands with a colleague. While Unitree is known for its innovative robotics, it remains unclear if they are directly involved in the Haneda trials or if they are part of a wider evaluation of available humanoid technologies. Responding to inquiries, Japan Airlines indicated that feasibility studies and risk assessments are ongoing, while Unitree has not provided comments. Analysts highlight that demographic shifts, such as an aging populace and declining birth rates, are increasing the need for humanoid robots. According to Barclays, these demographic trends are opening opportunities for humanoids to fill essential roles in industries like manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, healthcare, and hospitality. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development projects that Japan's working-age population may decrease by 31% from 2023 to 2060. Marc Einstein, a research director at Counter Research, anticipates that humanoid robots will become more prevalent in Japan's labor market. With support from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s administration, which is focused on stricter immigration policies, the government is likely to promote the use of humanoids. In March, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry released guidelines concerning robotics and AI to tackle workforce challenges stemming from declining birth rates and an aging population. Data from Japan's National Tourism Organization indicates a 3.5% increase in international arrivals in March, intensifying the operational demands on airports. Technological advancements have significantly improved the abilities of humanoid robots, particularly in terms of joint dexterity and AI software, enabling them to perform tasks that were previously unfeasible. Barclays describes physical robotics as the next frontier in AI development, predicting substantial growth in this sector, potentially reaching a valuation of $1.4 trillion by 2035. In China, companies like Unitree and Agibot are leading the charge in affordable humanoid development, with plans for initial public offerings to support their growth. Unitree recently became the first robotics firm to have its IPO application approved, aiming to raise approximately 4.2 billion yuan ($614 million). Despite these advancements, experts caution that humanoid robots may not completely resolve Japan's labor crisis. Analysts have indicated that these robots still struggle with delicate tasks and precise movements. Einstein notes that the programming and reasoning capabilities of humanoid technologies are still in their infancy, suggesting that human oversight will remain necessary in their deployment. However, with the rapid pace of development in this field, Counterpoint estimates that widespread deployment could be realized within five years.
