The U.K. government has announced its decision to back a £1.5 billion ($2 billion) loan to Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) following a severe cyberattack that disrupted the automaker's production for weeks. This financial support aims to stabilize JLR's cash flow and assist its supply chain, which has faced significant challenges due to the production halt. In a statement released on Sunday, government officials emphasized that the loan would help JLR reinforce its supply chain, which is critical as many small businesses rely on the company for their livelihoods. With around 120,000 jobs linked to JLR's operations, the impact of the production shutdown has been substantial. This situation marks a historic first, as it is believed to be the first instance of the U.K. government providing financial aid to a company directly affected by a cyberattack. The attack occurred on August 31 when JLR detected unauthorized access to its systems. The hackers, identified as part of a financially motivated group, claimed responsibility for the breach, which resulted in the theft of sensitive company data. During the production shutdown, JLR reportedly incurred losses of approximately £50 million. However, the company had posted a pre-tax profit of around £2.5 billion in 2024, indicating its potential to navigate this financial setback. Despite this, industry experts have raised concerns about the implications of the loan, suggesting it may inadvertently encourage further cyberattacks against U.K. businesses if hackers perceive government bailouts as a safety net for companies that neglect cybersecurity. Criticism has also been directed at JLR for its decision to outsource its cybersecurity operations to Tata Consulting Services (TCS), which has been linked to previous security breaches affecting other major U.K. retailers. TCS, known for providing IT support, may have been the entry point for the hacking incidents that have plagued several businesses recently. In light of these developments, JLR has announced its intention to resume car production shortly, although it has already missed several recovery deadlines.
