In a bold statement during a recent earnings call, Block's CEO, Jack Dorsey, cautioned about the profound effects of artificial intelligence on jobs, particularly within tech companies. This warning comes on the heels of his announcement to reduce Block's workforce by nearly 40%, impacting approximately 4,000 of its 11,000 employees. Dorsey characterized the future of Block as a "smaller, faster, intelligence-native company." He emphasized that the industry is not just beginning to grasp the implications of AI; rather, many organizations are lagging behind. He noted that AI is accelerating processes at Block, enabling a leaner team to achieve greater results with enhanced efficiency. "Intelligence tool capabilities are compounding faster every single week," he remarked. The CEO highlighted a significant leap in AI capabilities that occurred last December, which he believes outstrips Block's own internal tool, Goose, designed for streamlining coding and repetitive tasks. "Something remarkable happened in December last year where the models just got an order of magnitude more capable and more intelligent," Dorsey explained. He foresees a trend where more companies will adopt AI to enhance their efficiency, stating that Block is positioning itself ahead of a curve that he believes all businesses will eventually follow. Dorsey pointed out that there was considerable duplication within Block that necessitated this restructuring. CFO Amrita Ahuja added that engineering tasks that previously took weeks are now completed in a fraction of the time, thanks to AI-driven coding tools. She noted that productivity per engineer has surged by over 40% since September. While Block is reducing its overall headcount, it is simultaneously investing in senior engineering roles with a strong focus on AI.
