Italy's antitrust authority has levied a hefty fine against Apple, citing the company for exploiting its dominant position in the app marketplace. This ruling, announced on Monday, adds to a growing list of regulatory hurdles Apple is facing throughout the European Union. The Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) accused Apple of implementing restrictive policies on its App Store that unfairly disadvantage third-party developers while favoring its own services. The fine, amounting to several million euros, comes after a thorough investigation into Apple's management of data and payment systems related to mobile applications. According to AGCM, Apple has enacted a "discriminatory" approach to user data. The authority contends that Apple imposes more stringent privacy requirements and data-sharing barriers on third-party applications compared to its own pre-installed software. This perceived "double standard," the AGCM argues, enables Apple to maintain its dominance in the digital advertising and app distribution sectors. The investigation also scrutinized Apple's enforcement of its proprietary in-app purchase system, which can charge developers a commission as high as 30%. The regulator highlighted that by restricting developers from guiding users to more affordable external payment options, Apple is suppressing competition and artificially inflating prices for consumers in Italy. In response to the ruling, Apple has expressed its disagreement, insisting that its policies are intended to safeguard user privacy and security. The company plans to appeal the decision in Italian courts. This action by Italy mirrors a wider trend in Europe, where regulators are intensifying their focus on major tech firms under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). As the tech landscape evolves toward 2026, this ruling serves as a clear indication that the era of unchecked dominance by large platforms is swiftly coming to an end. For Apple, the ongoing challenge lies in navigating its lucrative ecosystem while adhering to increasingly rigorous international competition laws.
