Budget 2026: ISRO sees modest funding hike for 2026–27 as Department of Space gets Rs 13,705 crore

In the recently unveiled Union Budget for 2026, the Department of Space (DoS), which oversees the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has been allocated ₹13,705.63 crore. This marks a modest increase from the revised estimate of ₹12,448.60 crore for the current fiscal year. While the rise in funding may seem limited at first glance, it signals a shift in priorities. A significant portion of the budget is dedicated to advancing space technology, including enhancements in launch vehicles, satellites, and mission support infrastructure. This allocation underscores a commitment to bolstering India's core capabilities in space exploration. Notably, the budget adjustments reveal a mixed picture for various space initiatives. The allocation for Space Applications has increased from ₹9,601.98 crore to ₹10,397.06 crore, demonstrating a growing emphasis on practical applications of space technology. Additionally, the budget for Space Sciences has seen a substantial jump, rising from ₹184.62 crore in the previous year to ₹569.76 crore for 2026-27. Conversely, the INSAT Satellite Systems Program is facing a budget cut, with its allocation reduced from ₹205.95 crore in the revised budget for 2025-26 to ₹130.93 crore for the upcoming year. This mixed approach reflects a strategic realignment within India's space sector. Moreover, the budget also highlights a commitment to commercializing space capabilities. Funding for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) has been boosted from ₹1,030 crore to ₹1,403 crore, reinforcing the government's efforts to foster private sector involvement and transform ISRO’s technological innovations into market-ready services and products. Overall, while the funding for 2026-27 supports the continuity of India's space ambitions, it may not be sufficient to elevate the nation's standing among global space leaders.
