The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has marked a significant achievement by launching the LVM3-M6 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This mission carries the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite, representing a pivotal moment in India's commercial spaceflight efforts. The LVM3-M6 mission is specifically dedicated to deploying the BlueBird Block-2 satellite, owned by the U.S.-based company AST SpaceMobile. Its successful deployment into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) signifies the largest commercial satellite launch conducted by India to date. What sets the BlueBird Block-2 satellite apart is its ability to provide cellular internet directly from space. Unlike traditional systems, it can deliver mobile internet signals to standard mobile phones without requiring specialized antennas or terminals, seamlessly integrating with existing mobile networks. This mission holds great importance for ISRO, as it is the sixth operational flight of the LVM3 rocket and it successfully transported the heaviest commercial payload from India. The LVM3 is a sophisticated three-stage launch vehicle, featuring two solid strap-on motors, a liquid core stage, and a cryogenic upper stage. At launch, the rocket weighs 640 tonnes and stands 43.5 meters tall, capable of delivering satellites weighing up to 4,200 kilograms to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO). With the BlueBird Block-2 weighing approximately 6.5 tonnes, this mission not only showcases ISRO's reliability in handling major satellite operations but also enhances its reputation among international satellite operators. As ISRO continues to focus on commercial satellite launches alongside government missions, this milestone could elevate India’s standing in the global space industry.
