Ex-Google exec says AI is coming for your job — even if you're a podcaster, developer, or CEO

In a recent episode of the 'Diary of a CEO' podcast, Mo Gawdat, the ex-chief business officer of Google X, delivered a compelling warning about the future of employment in the age of artificial intelligence. Gawdat asserted that AI is not merely poised to take over low-level jobs but is on track to impact professionals at every level, including software developers, CEOs, and even podcasters. He expressed concern that a significant portion of knowledge workers could find themselves replaced within the next decade, emphasizing that many still underestimate the speed of this transformation. Gawdat pointed to his startup, Emma.love, which focuses on emotional and relationship-oriented AI, as an example of how technology can operate with minimal human resources. "This startup would have required 350 developers just a few years ago," he remarked. According to Gawdat, even those in elite positions should not consider themselves immune to the advancements of AI. He claimed that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will surpass human capabilities across various roles, including leadership positions. "The one thing they don’t think of is that AI will replace them too," he cautioned. Describing the current period as an "era of augmented intelligence," Gawdat believes we are in a transitional phase where humans and AI can collaborate. However, he warns that this will eventually shift to a stage of "machine mastery," where AI will completely take over many job roles, from administrative tasks to complex design work. Despite his warnings, Gawdat is not against AI; he is committed to developing ethical systems that embody human values such as love and connection. He cautioned, however, that the deployment of AI often prioritizes profit over ethics, leading to a future where socioeconomic disparities could deepen significantly. "Unless you're in the top 0.1%, you’re a peasant. There is no middle class," he stated. He anticipates a "short-term dystopia" starting around 2027, characterized by widespread unemployment and social unrest, unless society adapts accordingly. Yet, he also believes in a brighter future where creativity and human relationships can flourish, envisioning a world where work does not dominate people's lives. Gawdat's views have sparked debate within the tech community. While he describes AI as a pressing concern, others, such as Microsoft researchers, suggest that AI chatbots are more effective as tools for enhancing human tasks rather than outright job replacements. Opinions vary widely, with some experts warning of significant job losses while others, like Nvidia's CEO, advocate for a more optimistic outlook, suggesting AI will redefine work rather than eliminate it entirely.
