IrisGo, a startup backed by Andrew Ng, looks to become the AI desktop buddy you never knew you needed

In the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, the focus is shifting toward proactive systems—intelligent agents that can predict and fulfill user needs before they are even expressed. IrisGo, a promising startup, is at the forefront of this innovation. Having secured a $2.8 million seed funding round led by Andrew Ng’s AI Fund earlier this year, IrisGo aims to create a desktop companion for PCs that seamlessly learns and automates user workflows with minimal human intervention. Founded by Jeffrey Lai, a former Apple engineer known for his work on Siri’s Chinese version, IrisGo has taken a clever spin on the name, as 'Iris' is simply 'Siri' spelled backward. The concept behind Iris is straightforward yet powerful: teach it a task once, and it retains the knowledge for future executions without the need for repeated instructions. During a demonstration with TechCrunch, Lai showcased Iris’s capabilities by ordering coffee online. The AI recorded the steps for selecting a latte from Philz Coffee, entering credit card details, and completing the purchase. This example illustrates a broader ambition—automating a variety of business tasks. IrisGo features a library of built-in skills, including email drafting, invoice processing, report generation, and document summarization. Additionally, it learns from user behavior to expand its task capabilities autonomously. A notable aspect of Iris is its coding assistant, which resembles tools like OpenAI’s Codex, aimed at facilitating developers' work. "Our primary audience is knowledge workers in white-collar settings, where repetitive tasks abound," Lai explained. Despite advancements in AI, many office tasks remain manual and tedious. The vision for Iris is to transition toward a more autonomous workflow, enabling professionals to concentrate on strategic tasks while the AI handles clerical duties. Privacy is a key feature that sets Iris apart; it processes substantial data on-device, reducing reliance on cloud servers. While the system maintains a hybrid architecture for more complex tasks, Lai assures that cloud processing occurs only with user consent and employs end-to-end encryption for security. Gaining credibility has been integral to IrisGo's strategy, particularly through partnerships with influential figures like Ng, a co-founder of the groundbreaking Google Brain team. Their connection began at Carnegie Mellon University, leading to a successful pitch that attracted Ng’s backing. IrisGo has recently launched beta versions of its applications for macOS and Windows and is actively seeking partnerships with laptop manufacturers for preinstallation on new devices. A collaboration with Acer has already been established, and the company aims to forge similar agreements with additional hardware makers in the near future.
