According to the Financial Times, Iran leveraged the Signaling System 7 (SS7) protocols, which are fundamental to the operation of 2G and 3G networks, to intercept communications and locate service members. The SS7 framework has long been a critical component for connecting cellular networks worldwide, facilitating the routing of calls and messages. However, this same system has been exploited by various intelligence agencies to monitor mobile devices abroad. Through this method, Iran successfully pinpointed the locations of U.S. forces stationed in various military bases and hotels across Iraq, Bahrain, and other Middle Eastern nations, enabling the regime to orchestrate attacks that led to numerous injuries. In addition to exploiting SS7, Iran also utilized advertising technologies that are commonly employed to deliver personalized ads to mobile users, showcasing another dimension of how everyday technology can be repurposed for surveillance purposes.
