As the holiday travel season approaches, Apple has introduced a convenient feature for iPhone users: the ability to store U.S. passport information directly in their Apple Wallet. Announced recently, this new "Digital ID" option allows travelers to add crucial identification details, which can be scanned at airport security checkpoints when a Real ID is not available. The rollout of Digital ID will initially be available in a beta version at over 250 airports across the United States, where the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will implement this system for identity verification during domestic flights. However, it is important to note that the Digital ID does not replace a physical passport and cannot be utilized for international travel or border crossings. Previously, Apple enabled residents in 12 states and Puerto Rico to upload their driver's licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet. Now, adding a passport is a straightforward process. Users need to open the Wallet app, tap the plus sign, and select the Digital ID option. After scanning the passport’s photo page with their device's camera, they will authenticate the information by placing their iPhone on the embedded chip located on the passport's back page. To complete the verification, users must take a selfie and follow prompts that involve moving their head and closing their eyes. Once all steps are successfully completed, the passport information will be securely stored in the Wallet. Presenting the Digital ID at TSA kiosks is designed to be as seamless as making a purchase. Users simply double-click the side button of their iPhone to access the Wallet app, select the Digital ID, and hold their phone or Apple Watch up to the scanner. The machine captures a photo, allowing users to confirm their details, such as name and date of birth, using their face or fingerprint for authentication. Apple emphasizes that the passport information is encrypted and stored solely on the device, ensuring user privacy. The company cannot track when or where the Digital ID is presented, and the use of biometric authentication guarantees that only the rightful owner can access their information without needing to unlock or physically hand over their device.
