Apple's iPhone win loyalty game again, Android sees higher switch rates

A recent survey sheds light on the loyalty dynamics between iPhone and Android users, revealing that Apple continues to dominate in retaining its customer base. According to the Smartphone Loyalty Survey 2026 conducted by Sell Cell, iPhone loyalty has surged to an impressive 96.4%. In stark contrast, Android loyalty stands at 86.4%, with a notable 13.6% of users indicating a likelihood to switch brands. The survey, which gathered insights from over 5,000 participants, highlights a significant increase in iPhone loyalty, rising from 91.9% in 2021. This stability is further illustrated by the fact that only 3.6% of iPhone users are contemplating a switch, solidifying Apple's reputation for maintaining a loyal user base. While Apple leads the pack, Android users also demonstrate solid loyalty with 86.4% planning to stay with their devices. However, the striking difference lies in the switch rates, emphasizing a 10% loyalty gap between the two platforms. Notably, Samsung's loyalty has markedly improved, climbing from 74% in 2021 to 90.1% in 2026, while Google's loyalty has also seen significant growth, increasing from 65.2% to 86.8% during the same period. Among those few iPhone switchers, nearly 70% prefer to move to Samsung, while around 20% lean towards Google. Conversely, 26.8% of Android users considering a switch would choose an iPhone, indicating a competitive landscape. The reasons behind this loyalty and switching behavior are revealing. The survey found that 60.8% of iPhone users remain committed to the brand primarily due to their preference for Apple. Another 17.4% value the cohesive ecosystem that Apple offers, which enhances their experience through interconnected devices and services. On the other hand, many Android users appreciate the variety of devices available, which fosters exploration and contributes to higher switching rates. Economic factors also play a role, as some users feel that iPhones are priced too high compared to alternatives. In terms of user tenure, the survey indicates a stark contrast: 83.8% of iPhone users have been loyal to the brand for over five years, whereas only 33.8% of Android users can claim similar long-term ties. This data suggests a shift in the smartphone market towards greater stability, with users forming stronger attachments to their brands and exhibiting less frequent switching behavior than in previous years.
