Rumors are swirling that Apple may finally introduce an in-screen Face ID feature in its upcoming iPhone 18 series, according to recent leaks. A source from Weibo, known as "Smart Pikachu," claims that the tech giant is experimenting with a new technology utilizing 'spliced micro-transparent glass' for its Face ID system. This innovation is said to enable the infrared sensors of Apple's TrueDepth system to operate through the display without any distortion. Reports indicate that Apple has already urged its suppliers to expedite preparations for this potential breakthrough. While details remain limited, the focus is currently on the iPhone 18 lineup, with speculation surrounding which models will incorporate this cutting-edge Face ID technology. If implemented, this could significantly reduce the size of the Dynamic Island feature, possibly leading to a minimal cut-out design for the front camera, akin to several Android devices currently on the market. Earlier this year, The Information reported that the iPhone 18 Pro models might forego the Dynamic Island in favor of a pinhole cut-out located in the upper-left corner of the display. Although some leaks suggest that the Dynamic Island will remain, it may indeed be downsized. Industry analyst Ross Young previously mentioned that the iPhone 18 Pro could feature the under-display Face ID, while the Dynamic Island might not be entirely eliminated. Furthermore, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has pointed out that a slimmer Dynamic Island may be more likely than a fully integrated under-display Face ID system. Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 18 series in September, aligning with its traditional launch schedule. However, there is speculation that some models may be delayed until 2027, potentially introducing a successor to the iPhone Air alongside them. Additionally, the iPhone 18 Pro series might debut alongside Apple's first foldable iPhone. While specifics about the iPhone 18 Pro models remain scarce, leaks suggest they could be powered by the A20 processor, manufactured using a 2nm process which promises enhanced performance and battery efficiency. There are also indications that these models might feature Apple's proprietary C2 modem, signaling a possible end to Qualcomm's involvement in the Pro series. Before the iPhone 18 launch, Apple is reportedly planning to unveil the iPhone 17e in early 2026, which is anticipated to be the most affordable model supporting Apple Intelligence.
