Apple iPhone 17e leak hints at Dynamic Island and 60Hz screen

Apple's upcoming iPhone 17e is rumored to undergo a significant design transformation while forgoing a crucial display enhancement. According to a prominent leaker on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, the new model may feature a Dynamic Island, replacing the traditional notch seen in earlier models. This change could bring the budget-friendly iPhone closer in appearance to Apple’s recent flagship devices. The Dynamic Island design integrates the front camera and sensors into an interactive section at the top of the display, allowing users to see live updates for navigation, music, and call information. However, despite this aesthetic upgrade, the iPhone 17e is unlikely to include Apple’s ProMotion technology. It is expected to maintain a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz, contrasting with the higher refresh rates of up to 120Hz introduced in the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup last year. This decision seems aimed at keeping costs down for the device. Currently, the iPhone 16e features a design that mirrors the iPhone 14, complete with a notch. If the latest rumors prove accurate, the 17e could adopt a look similar to the iPhone 15, which was the first non-Pro model to implement the Dynamic Island and a more rounded body style. The same source has also indicated that the new model will be powered by the forthcoming A19 chip, replacing the A18 found in the iPhone 16e. This new chip, built on TSMC's advanced third-generation 3nm process, is expected to offer a performance boost of around 5-10% compared to its predecessor. However, there are suggestions that Apple might opt for a downclocked variant of the A19, which would align its performance closer to the A17 Pro, albeit with enhancements to the Neural Engine. Additionally, reports speculate that Apple might finally introduce a magnetic ring for MagSafe charging, a feature absent in the iPhone 16e. To keep production costs in check, the iPhone 17e may utilize an older C1 or C1X modem and skip the newer N1 wireless chip, as indicated by leaked coding references. Overall, the iPhone 17e is anticipated to retain familiar specifications, including a 12-megapixel front camera with Face ID and a single 48-megapixel rear camera.
