The iPhone 17 is easing Wall Street’s concerns about Apple’s AI troubles

Apple is currently enjoying a surge in success thanks to the iPhone 17, which has significantly alleviated concerns on Wall Street regarding the company's position in the artificial intelligence arena. The tech giant reported impressive earnings that exceeded analysts’ forecasts, driven largely by strong iPhone sales. For the quarter, Apple’s revenue soared to $143.8 billion, a notable increase from $124.3 billion during the same period last year. The iPhone itself brought in $85.3 billion, surpassing expectations of $78.2 billion. These figures reflect the first full quarter since the iPhone 17's launch in September, a crucial period for the company as it faces mounting scrutiny over its AI initiatives. Alongside these figures, Apple announced that there are now a staggering 2.5 billion Apple devices actively in use worldwide. CEO Tim Cook highlighted the record number of iPhone upgrades and impressive growth among “switchers”—those transitioning from Android to iPhone. Notably, revenue from China, a market that has presented challenges for Apple, climbed to $25.5 billion, up from $18.5 billion a year prior. “The demand for the iPhone was simply staggering,” Cook remarked during the earnings call. This positive outcome follows a tumultuous 2025 for Apple, which faced obstacles such as tariffs and delays in the release of a revamped Siri, which Cook confirmed is set to launch this year. In a strategic move, Apple has partnered with Google, allowing the tech giant’s AI and cloud technology to enhance Apple’s AI models, including the forthcoming Siri update. However, challenges still lie ahead for Apple. The industry is experiencing a memory shortage as manufacturers shift resources toward data center production rather than consumer devices like smartphones. While the iPhone 17 series has performed well, demand for the iPhone Air has been lackluster according to data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. Although the collaboration with Google indicates progress in AI, Apple will need to demonstrate its plans for integrating AI into new products. When questioned about the potential for monetizing AI, Cook expressed optimism, stating that AI “opens up a range of opportunities” across Apple’s various offerings and that the company is “very happy” with their partnership with Google.
