iPhone 17 Pro Max review: orange you glad the battery is bigger

Apple's latest release, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, takes a step back from the ultra-slim design trend with a slightly bulkier profile that accommodates a larger battery, promising enhanced performance. While the new Pro models may seem like incremental updates—aside from the eye-catching new orange color—they still offer significant benefits for users. One of the most noticeable changes is the upgraded unibody structure crafted from aluminum, which includes a redesigned camera bump that now supports MagSafe accessories. With a weight of 233 grams, the device is a bit heftier than its predecessor, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, but this added weight is offset by a sturdier build. For those concerned about durability, the new Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, combined with the original Ceramic Shield on the back, offers improved protection against damage. Battery life is a standout feature, with the Pro Max housing a 4,823 mAh battery compared to 4,685 mAh in the previous version. Users can expect over five hours of screen time, even with varied usage patterns. Notably, an eSIM-only version available in select regions can pack a whopping 5,088 mAh battery. This new model also introduces vapor chamber cooling, which helps maintain lower temperatures during intensive activities like gaming. Charging capabilities have also seen enhancements, with support for USB-PD 3.2 standards allowing for faster charging at 40W, and Qi2 wireless charging at 25W. This means quicker power-ups, especially when using compatible chargers. The display remains the same size as last year’s model but boasts an impressive peak brightness of 3,000 nits and a new anti-reflective coating, making it more usable in bright environments. While other flagship smartphones have also embraced brighter displays, Apple's offering stands out for its clarity and user-friendly features. Camera improvements are significant, too, with all three rear cameras now featuring a 48-megapixel sensor. The telephoto lens has been upgraded, offering 2x, 4x, and 8x options for zooming in. Although the 8x digital zoom may not capture every detail, it still produces decent images. On the front, the new 18-megapixel selfie camera includes a Center Stage feature that automatically adjusts the framing during video calls, enhancing the user experience. Interestingly, Apple has downplayed AI features in this release compared to last year’s model and competitors like Google’s Pixel lineup. Although the iPhone 17 Pro Max is powered by the new A19 Pro chip, which boasts improved neural performance, many anticipated AI innovations were notably absent. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is particularly tailored for creators, featuring new tools like ProRes RAW and Log 2, along with genlock capabilities for synchronized shooting across multiple devices. However, for general users or those with recent models, the enhancements may not justify an immediate upgrade. If your current device is over two years old, the upgrades across the board—including battery life, performance, and camera capabilities—might be worth considering.
