The anticipated iPhone 17 Air from Apple is set to launch with the A19 Pro chip, albeit with a streamlined configuration that includes only a 5-core GPU. This revelation comes from a reliable source on Weibo, known as Fixed Focus Digital, who has a substantial following and a history of accurate leaks regarding Apple products. According to the source, the higher-end models in the iPhone 17 lineup, specifically the Pro versions, will utilize the full 6-core GPU setup. The decision to reduce the number of GPU cores may stem from manufacturing processes known as 'binning,' where chips with minor variances are utilized to optimize performance and manage heat within the device's thin chassis. Interestingly, consumers are expected to experience minimal differences in day-to-day performance despite this change. This latest information stands in contrast to earlier predictions made by industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested the iPhone 17 Air would be equipped with a standard A19 chip. Furthermore, Fixed Focus Digital indicates that the base model of the iPhone 17 will also employ the regular A19 chip. Earlier insights from supply chain analyst Jeff Pu indicated the possibility of an A18 chip for the entry-level model, but he has since updated his forecast to align with the expectation of an A19 chip instead. As for the launch timeline, reports from German media outlet Phone-ticker.de suggest that Apple is planning to unveil the iPhone 17 series on September 9, with pre-orders starting on September 12, and devices available in stores and for delivery by September 19. The new lineup is expected to include four models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, continuing Apple's tradition of offering incremental chip upgrades across its product range with the Air model positioned as a lightweight yet performance-oriented option.
